Sydney Seymour, an NCAA Division 1 cross country finalist for Tennessee and a senior competing in her third full season for the Volunteers in addition to earning All-Southeastern Conference indoor honors, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Oct. 15 in the women's 6-kilometer Garnet race at the Florida State Invitational, which also serves as the Division 1 Pre-Nationals at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. Seymour reflects on her third-place effort, with she and 11th-place finisher Katie Thronson leading the Volunteers to a head-to-head tiebreaker victory to secure third overall Sept. 24 against Liberty at the Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. She shares her excitement for Tennessee being able to compete against the three programs ranked ahead of the Volunteers in the South Region in Alabama, Ole Miss and Florida State, in addition to racing against fellow Southeastern Conference rivals Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky and Vanderbilt two weeks ahead of the SEC Championship meet Oct. 29 in Missouri. Seymour explains how she overcame challenges earlier in her career that included being dismissed from the team her freshman year and how she diligently worked both academically and athletically to regain her spot, and how she appreciates coach Beth Alford-Sullivan for giving her another opportunity and allowing Seymour to develop into a leader in the program. After finishing fifth in the SEC Indoor 5,000-meter final and placing 105th at NCAA cross country nationals in March, Seymour also speaks about the struggles she faced with mental health during the spring track season and how she has benefited from seeing a therapist and taking additional time to focus on her needs mentally and emotionally, in addition to continuing to promote positive body image for women in sport, especially distance runners. Seymour revisits a pair of breakthrough races last October in Louisville, along with in February at Florida State, and how she hopes her experience of competing three times at Apalachee Regional Park will not only help her Oct. 15 at Pre-Nationals, but during the NCAA final, should she return Nov. 20 for the Division 1 championship meet. Seymour also shares how she developed her unique style and her aspirations to start her own business, in addition to her collaboration with Trackster and how significant it is to have a platform for runners created by runners, and the potential benefits available as a result of the new Name, Image and Likeness guidelines for student-athletes.
